Thailand, Laos & Vietnam
19. 2. - 8. 4. 2020 (50 day trip)
Vietnam Lao PDR Thailand
UPDATED January 10: I’ve decided to skip Oz & Fiji and go from New Zealand straight to Thailand. Staying at Ao Nang beach (near Krabi & Railay) Feb 17-24 and Chiang Mai Feb 24-March 1. Then moving on to Luang Prabang, Lao PDR, from March 1 to March 15 at least. Might take a trip further north in Laos as well. Between the 15th-20th of March I’m going to Hanoi and will spend about 3 weeks in Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Giang, Sapa) before flying back to the US April 8. If you plan to be in any of these areas at the same time, let me know if you want to hook up along the way for some day trips or bar hopping. In Luang Prabang I’ve booked a homestay where I stayed last summer which has two beds in separate rooms and a decent kitchen. I wouldn’t ask anyone to split the rent evenly but rather just kick in a little. So in LP I’ll have a cheap bed available if anyone needs it. ————————————————————————————-———————— ORIGINAL POST: I’m starting my trip in Auckland, NZ January 23rd and ending in Hanoi April 8th. I’ll be traveling with a friend the first 3-4 weeks in New Zealand and she thinks three is a crowd. But my plans for the remaining 6-7 weeks are flexible. I’m definitely going back to Luang Prabang, Lao PDR, sometime in March and I intend to spend the last 10+ days in Northern Vietnam (last week of March and first week of April). My plans are totally flexible from late February to late March. Possibilities include a week in Fiji, an Australian road trip spanning anywhere from one to four weeks anywhere in the country but I’m leaning towards the southern or western coasts, Bali or the Gili Islands in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand...or somewhere else in that general quadrant of the globe? If you’re going to be in this rather large area between late Feb and late March I might be able to synchronize my path with yours. I don’t plan to visit all of these places. I prefer to stay in one location for a week or more rather than hit the road every two or three days, with the exception of a possible Australian road trip and maybe a 2-4 day stop in Singapore between Oz or New Zealand and other SE Asian nations.

Places I want to see: Sapa and Ha Giang, Vietnam Louangphabang, Laos Anywhere in Australia but given the time of year and given that I did an east coast road trip earlier this year, I’m leaning towards somewhere on the coast from Melbourne going counterclockwise all the way around to Broome. But I’ll go anywhere in Oz. Maybe Singapore for a few days Fiji for a week or more is on the table as is Indonesia Thailand north or south, but I don’t want to spend much time in Bangkok If you’re going to Myanmar or Cambodia I could go along with either
Things I want to do: Motorbike the Ha Giang Loop in N Vietnam Bike/hike SaPa in N Vietnam Road trip through Oz (route TBD) Snorkel and chill in Fiji Visit friends in Luang Prabang and drinking buddies in Hanoi whom I met during two previous SE Asian trips in the past year.
