Aloft Adrift Amidst the High Himalayan Wilderness
3. 4. - 3. 6. 2025 (62 day trip)
Nepal
For me, a return journey into the Dolpo Himalaya, where I have spent 9-10 months total trekking about, conducting anthropological research, musing about the madness of the modern world I've left behind. This is not to be a work trip, however. This is to be a journey of renewal and reinvigoration. It's not a tourist trip, either, I note (though you can find some basic information about Dolpo on tourist trekking websites). No, this trip will be through some deep, high, dry wilderness days--sometimes weeks--away from the main trekking routes, which are not so busy in Dolpo anyway. Our guide (required now in Nepal) will be the brother of a dear friend (and the first doctor) from Dolpo. I have known her family for 15 years now. The guide is licensed, as the law requires. Otherwise, perhaps we'll journey with a porter or two. That's it. The plan, which I can detail for serious inquiries, is to trek a good bit of the western high route along the Great Himalayan Trail (see greathimalayatrail.com). It will take us over numerous 5000m passes, so fitness is crucial. We'll interact with the Dolpo-pa along the trail and in their homes, though most of the 45 or so day journey will be minimalist camping. This will be my sixth journey into Dolpo, though the plan this time is to begin in the Far West, head to Rara Lake, and then ascend over the remote high passes, near the Tibet border. We'll finish finally in Jomsom--tired, dirty, enlivened again. Please only serious--have funds (USD$3500-5000), have time, have physical capacity--inquiries. By the way, Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard is usually the only reason people have every heard of Dolpo, if you're interested. Regardless, I wish everyone well. Thanks.
